To high to be called a blip
Jan 4, 2007

I've had a jump in my viral load from under 50 m/l copies to 700. I have never missed my meds,(i switched from sustiva and truvada to atripla ). Is this to high of a number to be a blip? Thank you in advance

Response from Dr. Daar

Thank you for your post.

The term "blip" means different things to different people. In my mind the most important characteristic of a "blip" is that it is a detectable viral load in someone who had previously been undetectable that then returns to undetectable levels without any change in therapy. Consequently, in my mind how you define this increse will depend upon what happens with follow-up viral loads. If the next test is less than 50 copies/mL then I would call the 700 a blip. If the viral load remains detectable then I would call this virologic breakthrough and discuss with your provider what to do next.

Best, Eric
