| Getting Labs Dec 25, 2006 Hello, For the past fifteen years I have had laboratory tests completed prior to my appointment with the ID doctor. I have been treated in several different states during my treatment. Currently, I am seeing a physician at the University of Kentucky clinic in Lexington, KY. I have been advised that my doctor now will wants lab work completed AFTER the appointment rather than prior to the appointment. From my perspective, the PURPOSE of the appointment is to discuss RESULTS of the lab work and if additional tests were needed then they would be completed. The tests I am referring to in this message related to CD4 test and viral load. What is your opinion on this change. I think if my tests are not completed prior to the appointment, then what is the point of having the appointment in the first place. If there is a reason or change in practice that is part of a national change I would appreciate knowing it. If not, what is your perspective? I am trying to decide if I want to continue seeing this provider or if I need to find a new medical doctor for treatment. |

Response from Dr. Daar
Thank you for your post. I have been doing HIV medicine for many years and realize that all clinics run a little different with regards to when laboratory studies are performed. In fact, in our clinic we do it both ways, for some patients it is in advance of the visit and for others it is after depending upon the patients preference. You should discuss your concerns with your provider. Clearly it should all be about what makes you most confortable and I would hope the clinic will be willing to accomodate your wishes. Best, Eric |
