New NNRTI for patience with previous non-nuke resistance?
Apr 9, 2006

I understand that there is a new non-nuke (an NNRTI, such as Viramune or Sustiva)in testing for patients that have developed a resistance to a non-nuke. What is the status of this new med?

Response from Dr. Daar

You heard right. There have been several NNRTIs in development over the last few years. The main goal has been to develop a drug that is active against viruses resistant to current drugs in this class (such as Viramune or Sustiva). At this time there are several such drugs in development, with recent data from one study using the agent TMC125 showing promising activity in those with NNRTI resistant virus. Clinical trials are still underway and only time will tell whether this or other related drugs will make it to market.

Best, Eric
