Finding fat for injections
Jun 28, 2004

This is probably not a really common problem. I work out religously and, as a result, don't have very much fat on my body. Would I have a hard time finding spots on my body to inject Fuzeon? Is my butt an option?

Thank you.

Response from Mr. Kurtyka

Actually it's probably the biggest concern I hear about! You don't need to have tons of fat in order to inject Fuzeon. The needle's pretty short and doesn't need to go all the way in when you inject. Keep in mind the usual injection sites (where fat is most common): abdomen, thighs and upper arms. Upper arms can be awkward for self-injection; always easier if you have an assistant! I've heard of people using potato chip bag "clips" and hair clips to pinch the skin to free up your hand to give the injection; also leaning against a door or wall to scrunch up the upper arm area to self-inject. There is fat in the butt but there's also lots of muscles and nerves. If you were to try and inject in your butt, I'd suggest you talk with your healthcare provider and his/her nurse for some instruction in possible locating appropriate butt-sites and using the right technique to get the injection in the fat and away from any underlying nerves.
