Is it possible for HIV+ person to live longer or get cured if he is put on ARVs when the CD4 count is 1000+ and he is transfused with white blood cells of higher ratio

Response from Dr. Daar

There is currently no data demonstrating that people will live longer with HIV if therapy is started at CD4 cells in the 1000+ range. The decision as to when to start remains a complex one that requires a thorough discussion as to the risks and potential benefits of earlier initiation of therapy. The limited data available demonstrates benefits to starting at CD4 cells greater than 200 and some suggestion of benefits associated with starting at 200-350. Beyond that it has been hard to show benefit of starting with even higher CD4 cells.

There is no reason to believe that transfusing white blood cells of any kind is of any clinical utility.

Best, Eric
