Giving up on Fuzeon
Oct 18, 2006

Hi,I have been on Fuzeon for 5 and a half years and the injection site reactions have become unbearable now .Can't wait any longer for the biojector ,which will not be available in the UK till spring 2007.Do you think that MK0518 the integrase inhibitor is a suitable option to change to ,as I don't have any drug options open to me ?

Response from Ms. Salisbury

Hi, I think the Merck integrase inhibitor is a very good option for you. This is a new class of HIV medicine and there will be no carry over resistance for using this medication.

What is important is finding at least one and maybe two more HIV meds to put with it to give it the best chance to work. The new second-generation nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor TMC-125 will be available hopefully in the next year, as well as the CCR5 antagonist maraviroc. This is also a new class of HIV medication.

The best thing to do is stay on your existing regimen as long as you can. This will bridge you to the new classes of medicines and not allow your immune system to become compromised. Good luck and take care. Carol
