are my abdominal injections too deep?
Aug 5, 2005
dear don, i recently taught myself how to inject fuzeon. no one has observed my technique, so i don't know if it's correct. when pinching a site, i ensure there is fat in to accomodate the needle. i insert the needle until i feel a 'breakthough'. the needle appears to be all the way in. am i injecting to deep? the needle isn't very long. i am afraid that going only 75% will result in injecting directly into the skin. i have not experienced many site reactions.
sincerely,
pkevin

Response from Mr. Kurtyka

pkevin,
It sounds like you are using good technique based on your description. It's hard to know for sure without watching you! Is there a nurse or physician where you are treated that can observe your injection technique? Have you been able to watch the Fuzeon video that comes with your initial supply kit? If you didn't get a video, you can call the Fuzeon support line and I'm sure they'll send you one. It can be very helpful to compare your technique to that in the video.
If you were injecting too deep, you'd probably be experiencing an increase in injection site reactions. If you're not going into the fat, you might also be seeing more irritation. Based on your lack of problems, you're probably doing a great job!
Have you had a set of labs drawn since starting Fuzeon? If so, hopefully these will give you and your healthcare provider the information that will confirm that Fuzeon is working and your injections are delivering the medication properly.
