POSITIVE AND ALIVE
Nov 1, 2007
Doc,
I am on trimune 30 and my health is just fine. The only problem is I get tickling sensations in my legs. I am a living proof because my CD4 was 15 but I was up and about though I had just lost weight. That was 6 months ago, now my CD4 is 110. What other supplements should I take? Any suggested vitamines? I am in Southern Africa.

Response from Dr. Daar

Trimune 30 is a combination pill of stavudine (D4T) with 3TC and nevirapine (viramune). What you are experiencing may be consistent with drug-induced peripheral neuropathy which is a common side effect of stavudine. I would encourage you to meet with your provider and share your complaints. If it is felt this is related to peripheral neuropathy then the best thing you can do is get off of stavudine before the symptoms become worse and irrevirsible. It would be worth checking to make sure you are not deficient in Vitamin B12 and folate which can also cause neuropathy and it would not be unreasonable to use a multivitamin per day, but the most important thing to do is discuss this with your provider.
Best,
Eric
