Is drug combo a good one?
May 21, 2007

My Mom has had HIV since the early 90's and has been on the same cocktail for many years. My concern is it time to change since she has a pneumonia several times in the last year and a half and is getting much weaker to the point she has had to retire completely. Her meds are Norvir, Trizivir, and Reyataz. Is this an up to date cocktail or is there something better out there for her? Her Doctor is very good, but conservative.

Response from Dr. Daar

As is often the case I really would need much more information in order to say whether this is the best regimen for your mother or not. I am assuming that she has been on several regimens in the past and has ended up on this one. If true, this may well be a reasonable regimen assuming that her viral load is consistently undetectable. That is the real issue in a situation like this. Talk to her provider about your concerns and make sure that her virus is controlled, if so then the only question is whether she is tolerating the medications. If not, other options should be discussed.

Best, Eric
