The Future of HIV Treatment
Nov 5, 2007

I have been doing a lot of reading and research about how fantastic HIV/AIDS treatments are vs. what it used to be like. I am hearing a lot of optimism regarding a treatement vaccine and treatements that won't need to be taken regularly, but only with periodic shots/injections and successful clinical trials with the next generation of treatment. Is this "hype" or is HAART probably the only thing we have to look forward to for the next several years and beyond?

Response from Dr. Daar

The good news is that you are correct that treatment has become very effective and generally well tolerated. However, there is not a great deal on the horizon that will modify the current strategies for treatment with daily pills. In particular, there has been little progress with vacines and most medications do remain as daily orally administered agents. Nevertheless, often antiretrovirals are taken as one or only a few pills once per day.

Best, Eric
