HIV Vaccine?
May 4, 2006
I recently read an article that address research being done on HIV-negative people for an HIV-vaccine. My question is is this a vaccine for the negative people only as prevention...or would this vaccine work for HIV positive people too somehow?

Response from Dr. Daar

Hi Howard,
There are growing numbers of HIV vaccine strategies being pursued. Eventually some will target those HIV-uninfected to keep them that way and others HIV-infected to assist their body in controlling infection. At this point most of the work is deigned to simply find a strategy that induces a meaningful immune response in the body of animals and humans with the hope that they work at all. In fact, there are studies underway in both HIV-infected and uninfected to test the utility of various vaccine strategies currently available. The science is getting better in this area but there is still a long way to go.
Best,
Eric
