Dr. Cohen, how does treatment for HIV2 differ from HIV1? May 31, 2002 Dr. Cohen: Hello. Thanks for your very complete answers concerning HIV and its treatment. My question relates to the differences between treatments for HIV1 and HIV2. I have heard that some classes drugs effective as part of HAART are ineffective against HIV2. Do you think a three drug combo for HIV2 will become a reality soon. Boris C |

 Only the nonnucleoside class is not expected to work against HIV 2 - the nucleosides (azt etc) including tenofovir should work fine, and the protease inhibitors do as well. So there are many three drug HAART combos that would work against HIV2 - since there are many ways to put three of these meds together - including 2 NRTIs and a PI, 3 NRTIs, 1 NRTI and 2 PIs, just 2 PIs, etc...
