How can I help?
Mar 31, 1997
I recently agreed to accompany my friend to the clinic to receive the results of an HIV blood test. What should I say to my friend when/if she finds out that she is HIV positive, and the initial reaction sets in?

Response from Rev. Pieters

First, give her permission to feel her feelings. Help her to know that you are a friend she can trust with her feelings. Even with the promise of new treatments, it is still overwhelming to hear this news. Be prepared to give comfort and reassurance, if that is what she needs. Don't try to rescue her from her feelings, but always remember in your own mind, and remind her, that as long as there is life, there is hope.
Secondly, and just as importantly, give her hope. There is every reason for newly-diagnosed people to have hope today. With advances in treatment, she doesn't have to think of this diagnosis (if she is positive) as an imminently terminal condition. Many, many people living with HIV are enjoying healthy, happy productive lives thanks to protease inhibitors. Please see my column, "So You're Going to Live."
Don't let her fall into the all-too-common trap of feeling she is being punished by God. Please read the article: "HIV/AIDS: Is It God's Judgment?" She is a beloved child of God, and God will be with her on every step of this journey.
Stay with your friend with hope and faith in God who loves you both!
