Faith or Denial
May 20, 1997
My question is this. When my faith is strong I don't worry about the virus at all. I know it is still there but what ever the outcome I must give the hard things to Jesus. By giving the facts about the virus I can't control to Jesus, is it the right thing to do or is it just denial?

Response from Rev. Pieters

Giving what you cannot control or change to Jesus is always a good thing to do. However, it would be denial if you were giving what you can control or change to Jesus.
For instance, if I were to say, "I'm turning my illness all over to God," and then did nothing to help myself survive and thrive with HIV, this would be denial. It's denial because there is so much I can do myself to improve my chances of living well with HIV. It is unhealthy denial when turning it over to God or Jesus becomes an excuse for not taking treatments which can extend our lives, or not doing everything we can to create the conditions for God's healing power to work in our bodies.
Trusting Jesus with those things over which we are powerless is a healthy response. But when we use faith in God as a reason for inaction, that is an unhealthy denial. God has given us so many tools to help ourselves. To sit back and wait for God to do it all is not just denial, it's self-defeating and lazy!
I believe that we are partners with God in creating our wellness and our lives. If, at the end of the day, we have used every tool God has given us, and there is nothing more we personally can do, it is entirely appropriate to give it to Jesus.
