can fundamental christians love homosexuals
Mar 12, 1997
i am a fundamental christian woman who at one time struggled with the temptations of homosexuality. i searched the scriptures in hopes of finding that God would condone this, but i found at least 6 different scripture verses that prove God does not condone this SIN. Please continue to read even though i may have just offended you. I went to a support group with other Christians who want to overcome this, they helped me to overcome. Not all christians as, the homosexual community would like you to think, hate those who are gay, if they do they need to reevaluate their relaitonship with the Lord. I say all this to say, that i want to see and help those who desire a life change. There are people who know where you are coming from. Rev. Pieters, please look up the following verses: Genesis 18:20; Leviticus 18:22, Romans 1:27, 1 Corinthians 6:9, Jude 7, and Ephesians 1:7. May Ghod's truth set you free, not your truth or mans truth, but Gods.

Response from Rev. Pieters

May God's truth set YOU free, sister, to be the person God created you to be, not the person fundamentalist Christians have taught you to be.
I have spent many years studying and answering challenges about the scriptures you cited. First of all, you forgot to include Leviticus 20:13 in your list of passages which fundamentalists use to clobber gay and lesbian folks. But even with the addition of that scripture, homosexuality is at best a peripheral issue in the Bible. If the Biblical writers were as concerned with homosexuality as some fundamentalist Christians seem to be, why didn't they write about it more?
You will find if you do a careful analysis of these scriptures, that they all deal with something other than the psycho-sexual orientation of lesbians and gay men. Genesis 18, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, is a story condemning gang rape, not the loving relationship between two people of the same gender. Leviticus not only speaks against two men having sex, it condemns eating shell fish, pork, or rare meat; wearing clothes of mixed fabric; and intercourse during menstruation. Are you out campaigning against all of the things forbidden in Leviticus, or just selectively choosing homosexuals as your target? How come we don't see more fundamentalists picketing Red Lobster or other seafood restaurants?
In the original Greek, the New Testament passages you cite refer to prostitution and abusive uses of sexuality, not loving homosexual relationships. Jesus never once mentioned homosexuality. It isn't a concern to him at all, if you believe the Gospel writers.
As Christians, many of us believe that we live under the Law of Christ, which is the Law of Love. The love that we share in our homosexual relationships is every bit as sacred, creative, and loving as the love shared by heterosexuals.
Why would God have graced me and so many other gay men and lesbians with miracles of love and healing if God condemns our "sin"? Why would God have granted me the miracle of complete remission from AIDS, Kaposi's Sarcoma, and Lymphoma if God didn't love me just as I am? God knows I preach the goodness and sacred worth of lesbian and gay love everywhere I can, and God continues to bless me mightily!
You are free to believe that you must live against your nature, and pretend to be a heterosexual. In the same way, I am free to believe that God loves me as an active, sexual gay man. Virtually all the homosexuals I have known who have tried to "change" have returned to their gay or lesbian lifestyle, convinced that while behaviors may change for a while, the sexuality which God gave them will not and cannot change.
I will pray for your liberation, that you may know God's love for you just as God created you. Sexuality is not a sin. It is a God-given part of being human. Sin is turning from God and all that God gives us, including our sexuality. Jesus died for our sins, not our sexuality.
Many of us consider the closet of "change ministries" to be enslavement. Slavery is clearly condemned in the Bible. May God set you free, sister.
