 Existen 6 drogas aprobadas en la categoría de análogos nucleosidos. Son el AZT, el 3TC, el D4T, el DDC, el DDI y el abacavir. Varias más están en fase de investigación. El AZT y el D4T son análogos de la timidina (una de las cuatro posibles base que forma el DNA), el DDI, es análogo de la adenosina, el abacavir es análogo de la guanosina y el DDC y el 3TC son análogos de la citidina.
