Dear Doctor Boyle,
I like your optimistic views concerning a "cure" or treatable with a vaccine.
If society ever gets over their moral or religious beliefs about limiting research with gene therapy and/or stem cell research, do you think this may be an avenue that could cure HIV once and for ever? Is there currently any research in this area for HIV that you know of?
| Response from Dr. Boyle
We know that certain unique genetic characteristics make it more difficult to contract HIV and lead to a slower progression of HIV disease. Some of these are being explored currently as far as potential therapies, but it will be many, many years before this becomes clinically useful. In the meantime, we have the agents to control HIV in most patients, and others are on the way. So, progress continues on many fronts, including the exploration of gene therapy.
