Will there be a similar progression
Oct 28, 2001

Thank you for your time and attention. My partner passed away 7 years ago. He had suffered from PML. What is the likelihood of coming down with the same opportunistic infection as the one who infected you?

Response from Dr. Aberg

PML (Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy) is caused by JC virus, a virus that is usually acquired during childhood. The transmission of JC virus is poorly understood. In the majority of patients, PML is thought to be reactivation of the JC virus therefore your risk of developing PML from your partner is unlikely. However, 60-80% of adults in the United States have antibodies to JC virus so if you have been exposed to JC virus, you would have a risk of developing PML just like anyone else who has been exposed to JC virus. About 4-8% of patients with advanced AIDS (CD4 less than 50) may develop PML. There is no known preventive therapy at this time.
