Dose of fenofibrate
Aug 4, 2000

My brother has been able to reduce his triglycerides from 1,200 to 240 by taking two pills of fenofibrate per day (200 mg each pill). However, his doctor says that two pills per day could damage liver function. Is it true? My brother also tried gemfibrozil and lipitor, but didn't work. Thank you so much P

Response from Dr. Henry

Liver toxicity from fenofibrate is dose related and the maximum recommended dose is 200mg. One might consider carefully combining with pravastatin or atorvastatin and monitoring liver enzymes. I would agree with your brother's doctor that the higher dose could be a problem. Keith Henry, M.D.
