picking a plastic surgeon
Aug 25, 2000

First of all thank you for having the time to answer some of the many concerns. I would like to know how would i locate the right and most quailfy dr. to remove a hump.It have grown 3 times its size in about 7 months .

Response from Dr. Boyle

You may want to discuss this with your doctor. He or she probably knows of a plastic surgeon in your area. If not, try contacting a local HIV support organization (for example, GMHC). If all else fails, talk to some plastic surgeons in your area and ask about their experience with treating this problem. If they are inexperienced, ask if they know a surgeon to whom they can refer you.

Unfortunately, surgical removal of a dorsocervical fat pad (a "buffalo hump") does not appear to be a long-term solution since the "hump" frequently recurs. There are other treatment options (for example recombinant human growth hormone) and you may want to discuss these with your doctor as well.

Brian Boyle, M.D., J.D.
