HIV & HCV. Drug induced hepatitis?
May 4, 1998

Dear Doc,

I am on a combination of Zerit + Videx + Hydrea. I have active HCV. Recently I have had jaundice. Could this be due to the drugs? I asked this question before but no reply.

Please reply. I am presently off all drugs. I would like to know whether I could continue taking my old regimen which kept my VL<20.

Thanks

Response from Dr. Murphy

Dear Hepatitis C Questioner,

It is hard to say what caused your flare up of hepatitis. This could be due just to hepatitis C, or, as you suspect, your drugs. Zerit, on rare occasions, has been associated with liver dysfunction, although hepatitis is very unusual. The only way you will know for sure is to try the medicines again and monitor the liver function very closely (like a blood test every week).

Good luck.
