| interaction of lipid lowering meds. Sep 12, 2001 I have been on Viracept, D4t,3tc, and Atenolol for over 4yrs. UD viral load, 1100 Tcells. Lipids have been as high as 303 Cholest. and 745 Trigly. Have been on Lipitor, and Zocor, quit because of muscle pain. Also was on Baycol but it was pulled off the shelf. All three lowered lipids to almost normal quickly. Lipids up again, not on statin for month. Choles 223 and Trig 230. Will start Lescol soon. Will Lescol be as apt to interact with my Meds as the others. Thank you |

Response from Dr. Bartlett
The treatment of elevated lipids can be very complicated in persons on antiretroviral therapy. The protease inhibitors and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors are metabolized through the cytochrome P450 system in the liver. The HMGCoA reductase inhibitors, or "statins", are also metabolized through this enzyme and therefore there is great potential for drug interactions. Preliminary evidence suggests that Pravastatin, or Pravachol, may have less potential for interactions. I am not aware of any interaction studies with Lescol, and I would be apprehensive to recommend it to you. | |||
