| What is PML?? Dec 9, 1997 Howdy at ya' - I've read twice now in your Treatment Forum about PML. Sounds like a neurological disease. From what I've read about neuropathy from the folks who submit questions, many of the symptoms could be related to any number of neurological diseases. What exactly is PML? My dad died of ALS - since I've had full-blown AIDS and now have neuropathy, I've asked my doctor about any connection to HIV and a greater chance of coming down with ALS, if it is genetically transferred. Any connection, you think?? Thanks, Will |

Response from Dr. Gallant
There is no connection between HIV and ALS. There is also no connection between neuropathy, a disease of the long peripheral sensory nerves, and PML, a disease of the brain caused by the JC virus which in turn is unrelated to ALS. PML tends to cause progressive dementia and/or deterioration of neurologic function, usually in people with advanced HIV disease. Fortunately it is fairly uncommon, because there is no good treatment for this disease. JG | |||||||||
