thanks for your input
Dec 31, 1997

I want to thank you for informing me that it is not recomended to take ddc with d4t. As i wrote that i was having a major problem with nueropothy, and you folks recomended that i stop ddc immediatly. Well last night after i read your responce i had, had enough pain and was read to listen. So i called my doctor at @ 2am in the morning informing him of my decicion to switch to ddi form ddc. Well i imformed his answerimg machine. Also i asked that he call my phamacist and order a Rx for ddi for me. I hope he wont get mad that i made the decicion to switch without his blessing...but im sure he will agree that it was/is the right thing....

I just want to say thanks for being here.. you folks are a real help to all people with hiv / aids. God bless you all and have a safe 1998.

sincerely;

Response from Dr. Gallant

Eddie,

Maybe I'd better clarify what I said. Taking d4T plus ddC is not recommended for anyone, especially for those who have neuropathy. But your neuropathy isn't going to get any better on d4T/ddI, either, because they both cause neuropathy, too.

Once in awhile, people with mild neuropathy do OK on reduced dose d4T, provided they're not taking any other "d-drugs." But if your neuropathy is bad, you need to get off the d-drugs altogether, and you CERTAINLY can't take two of them.

You need to sit down and talk this over with your doctor, not his answering machine. Obviously, it's not as simple as stopping the offending medications or switching from one to another. You need to find out how you can come up with a new combination that will be effective but not neurotoxic. I can't give you the answer because I don't know your treatment history. I'm glad you're finding this forum helpful, but in the end, these decisions are between you and your doctor.

Good luck!

JG
