| Dreams or Reality? Sep 2, 2001 I was curious is it likely that we will ever have a true once a day formulation for hiv meds? By this I mean if I could imagin the perfect out come of research it would be that person would wake up take 3 or 4 pills and thats it for the day! That the pills would have limited and very mild side effects and would work exceptionally well in the vast majority of people who took them(maybe say 90+) The drugs would be durable and would allow the persons who took them to live full lives and would not have there longevity decreased due to HIV. My question is simple is this just a fantasy or is it a reality that is coming? Could you expand your answer to include how or when you think this might become a reality? Thanks for the great job you are doing on this website, |

Response from Dr. Boyle
Once daily therapy is certainly on the way and I suspect that within the next few years most patients will be on it. Sustiva (efavirenz) and Videx/Videx EC (didanosine) are already approved for once daily. There is strong evidence for Epivir (lamivudine) and Viramune (nevirapine) once daily. There is also some evidence to support Ziagen (abacavir) once daily and Zerit ER (stavudine) will be entering trials for once daily therapy. Viread (tenofovir) will be once a day and will likely be approved in teh next few months. There are several studies examining once daily protease inhibitors, and atazanavir (BMS 232632) is entering phase III trials and will likely be the first true once daily PI. So, things are getting easier and simpler and you can expect that things will be getting much easier and much more tolerable in the near future. | |||
