is ther any services for people living with AIDS' and suffering from lypo/Buffalluhump/inflamation of my beely. My self esteam is going down the tubes.is there any DR. that is provding these surgery's under Ryan white I have a very low income. thank Please Reply.

Response from Dr. Henry

Currently I am not aware of any Ryan White supported programs for the surgical treatment of fat accumulation. There are several important studies addressing that issue now open in the US. One study involves the use of growth hormone for the treatment of HIV associated lipodystrophy focusing on accumulation of fat in the belly or upper neck. Another study is being conducted by the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (AGTG) and involves the use of one or two diabetic medications for the same problems. You may want to ask your HIV Provider if there are any study sites near you. Many other interventions are being considered for management of your problem such as changing medications, high dose vitamins, exercise, diet changes, testosterone, etc. It is frustrating at the moment since we don't know WHY this is happening. I do expect that we will learn alot over the next 1-2 years that will provide help to persons in your situation. I would discuss these and other options with your HIV provider. KH
