Red skin
Mar 30, 2000

have you ever seen where a HIV+ has played sport (esp. on a warm day) they go really red. My neck, top of body and arms (even the underneaths of my arm) go really red and sort of rashy. I am talking redder than everyone else!

Could this be HIV related? Surely someone would have come across it?

Response from Dr. Henry

I get lots of questions related to your skin redness. Some people get increased vasodilation with exercise (others with emotional stress=blushing) which has little to do with HIV status or any of the HIV drugs. Since HIV can infect the lining of blood vessels there may be some people who get more excitable blood vessels but that has not been studied much. Again, in my pre-HIV life I used to see patients in the office who had your same complaint and were sensitive about it. I don't think in any way that it labels you as being HIV positive but people understandably get self-conscious. Keith Henry, M.D.
