| Lipoatrophy w/ new drugs? Jun 8, 2001 Dr. Aberg, For the last two years I have taken Ziagen, DDI and Amprenavir. Recently my v.l. has crept up to 1,200 and tomorrow the doctor will do a phenotype. I still work and very much worry about how I will look if I am hit with lipoatrophy again(which had subsided a bit.) Does Kaletra , Sustiva and Nevirapine or Delavardine cause it also???? I need to keep working. Thank you. |

Response from Dr. Aberg
We really do not know what causes lipoatrophy (fat wasting). Some experts believe that it is more associated with the nucleosides such as D4T, DDI. But at this point, I would have to say it is still unclear. There have been no studies showing that switching drugs or stopping drugs reverses lipoatrophy. There is a study in development that will try to see if there is a difference in development of lipoatrophy among patients who take a nucleoside regimen compared with those not on nucleosides. I wish I had some answers for you but don't give up, we are working hard to discover what causes lipoatrophy and how we can reverse this process. | |||
