Should I take Immune boosters
Oct 23, 2013
Hi, I am HIV+ (13 years) not on ARV's. Last results - CD4 - 750, VL 9500. My doctor says that if I take immune boosters, the HIV feeds off this and VL rises. If I eventually go on to ARV's then with a zero VL I could take boosters. Is this correct? Kind regards, Fiona
Response from Dr. Henry
There are no proven direct immune boosters in the setting of HIV infection. Drugs like interleukin-2 have been tried without success. High level suppression of HIV with antiretroviral therapy is always immune protection and most often immune boosting. Other types of immune boosting (ie drugs to decrease inflammation, improve gut function) are under study but have not been proven in clinical trials to be effective to date. KH
