How long is PEP
Sep 8, 2013

Hi Dr. I had protected insertive sex with a female that is HIV positive. My doctor subsequently put me on a 6 week course of Pep on ATRIPLA within 20 hrs. After 26 days I tested negative for all STI's and HIV. I questioned my Dr on why the 6 week pep course, where as all the forums mentioned 28 days. The response was that PEP is 6 weeks to be sure. The question is weather my Dr is not overprescribing PEP? Your thoughts please!!

Response from Dr. Henry

The standard (though fairly empiric without much data from studies) duration of post exposure prophylaxis is 28 days. KH

Musculoskeletal pain
Tenofovir and Hematuria (microscopic)
