aids stop treatment and reinfection
Jun 2, 2013

Hay there

Was the reason that the rebound of HIV after treatment was discontinued be reinfection?????

Response from Dr. Henry

In the majority of case (>> 95%) there is viral rebound often to pretreatment levels after stopping ART. Effective HIV treatment (ART) suppresses new viral production but does not clear HIV out of deep tissue/cellular reservoirs. When treatment is stopped virus replication is not longer prevented and virus production starts up again since the immune response to HIV is not generally improved by effective ART the virus has an open pathway to begin reproducing itself again. Viral superinfection does occur but is not needed for viral rebound to occur once off effective ART. KH
