Sperm count side effects
Apr 24, 2013
I am hiv- with and hiv+ man. We want to have a child. Currently I am taking truvada. He as well takes truvada and issentress. Would these medicines reduce his sperm count in any way?
Response from Dr. Henry
I am not aware of a clear signal from the published literature, nor have I observed in our HIV clinic, a pattern that suggests that Truvada significantly reduces sperm count or fertility. There has been mixed reports about fertility/sperm counts in HIV+ men. The data can be complicated due to presence of other factors contributing to fertility problems (ie low testosterone levels, poor health, abuse of alcohol or other drugs, smoking, obesity, nutrion deficiencies, and others). Many couples have successfully conceived healthy children in settin of one or both taking Truvada. If any reader is aware of a published article on the subject please post. KH
