Response from Dr. Henry
HIV currently not curable except possibly under very unusual and expensive circumstance (witness the case of the Berlin patient) but efforts for a cure are intensifying so there is hope there. The life expectancy question does not have a simple answer-also try of the general population (ie the average life expectancy of a 20 year old is different than the life expectancy of a 75 year old). For areas of the world with good access to HIV treatment and health care, HIV+ patients who are doing well on HIV treatment (often defined as undetectable HIV levels in blood and CD4 counts >> 350-500) have a life expectancy measured in decades and approaching that of the HIV- population.
