HIV infection most often takes many years (average 10 but wide range) to damage the imune system before symptoms develop and life threatening infections are seen.I hope your friend has access to a good HIV specialist--often HIV treatment can reverse the clinical situation even in patients presenting very late but there are situations when treatment is not effective.
