Taking Atripla on empty stomach what does it mean?1Taking it 3hrs after eating or 2.Taking no food after taking Atripla. My second question is does it matter taking Atripla and not sleeping , when on night shift I decided not to change timing but continue to take it at 9pm whether on duty or not
Response from Dr. Henry
The recommendation to take Atripla on an empty stomach is generally to avoid the fat effect on absorption of efavirenz that can lead to higher levels of efavirenz (higher risk for side effects--doesnt lessen and may enhance anti-HIV effect). The general recommendation to take Atripla before bed time is due to the empty stomach issues AND the minimizing the central nervous side effects of efavirenz that can include dreams and sleepiness. If you dont notice dream or sleeping changes from the Atripla than you likely can take the Atripla at a time convenient for you and not dependent on your sleep cycle. KH
