Shoulder Surgery and general anesthetic
Feb 24, 2012

Hi,

I am thinking about having Surgery on my Pectural Major tenton, as i torn it in the gym a few years ago. They will be putting an allograft tendon and using a general anesthetic. My VL is <70 and my CD4 is 470. I am currently taking: Norvir Viread Darunavir Abacavir

Will any of my meds interactive badly with the anesthetic? should i miss a dose before the operation?

Kind regards,

Andy

Response from Dr. Henry

There can be some drug interactions between your HIV Meds (particulary the protease inhibitors) and commonly used anesthetic agents so your HIV doctor, pharmacist, and anesthetist need to review the treatment plan. Often the doses of HIV Meds are held the day of surgery (NPO) and resumed the next day. KH
