Sep 28, 2011
Dr. Henry, first of all thank you for your work on thebody.com. In regards to the "Sangamo's SB-728 HIV Gene Therapy", does this therapy involve any type of chemo after collecting the patients white blood cells. My father just completed an autologous stem cell transplant and the high dose chemo given after the stem cell harvest was the most agressive ive seen.
Response from Dr. Henry
To my knowledge the zing finger related Sangamo SB-728 treatment does not involve use of standard chemotherapy but rather used engineered cells to shut down cellular production of CCR5 receptors making it difficult for HIV to enter CD4 + T-cells. The studies are very early and involve so far modest increases in the level of engineered HIV resistant cells but results are promising enough to go forward with more studies. KH
