|Chronic Hepatitis B and HIV
Sep 14, 2011
Hi doctor, i am recently diagnosed with HIV. I am also a chronic hepatitis B carrier from birth. I have heard of the potent toxic effects of the ARVs on the liver. Can you suggest what drugs i should take? thank you so much
Response from Dr. Henry
A full assessment of your HIV (including resistance testing) and hepatitis B status (activity level of infection) is needed to determine if treatment of either or both infections is indicated and would drugs active against both viruses be effectively used (ie emtricitabine and tenofovir). In most situations there is minimal expected liver toxicity from the currently recommended HIV drugs. KH
