| Glucose Levels Rising Jun 17, 2011 Hello, I've started Atripla back in Sept 2010 and have since gone undetectable and am working on getting my immune system back as normal as I can. The one thing that troubles me is my Comp Metabolic panel shows that my glucose level is steadily rising (and my last panel showed my Creatine level was at the upper limit) and I'm not really sure what I can do about it. I'm 5'10 150 and enjoy many outdoor activities. Since my previous lab I started taking Fish oil suppliments with ratios that replicate was is found in Lovaza (though, I only take 2 capsules) in order to help my lipids out, which were rather high when I was diagnosed. I was able to bring my triglycerides down to the middle of the normal range, HDL up a few points, but the Glucose is worrying me, as everything I read says it can indicate the beginnings of insulin resistance (and, Lypodystrophy issues). I drink diet soda, and I have been avoiding trying to follow my dietician's advice for my diet.. but I do worry about how the glucose level has steady risen on me. I know my buddy, the virus, is not resistant to anything out there currently and I was curious.. is there a better medication combo that I may benefit from? |

Response from Dr. Henry
Many factors can contribute to risk for insulin resistance/diabetes (family history, diet, exercise all important). Patients often gain weight when starting HIV treatment (the return to health effect) which can lead to some increased insulin resistance. I recommend a full diet/exercise, glucose assessment (ie glucose tolerance test and /or HgA1c) to assess where you are right now regarding glucose metabolism and what to expect in the near future (key to making good prevention/management recommendations).
