Kidney Transplant
Jun 5, 2011

I live in Honolulu. I have been HIV+ for over 15 years. My kidneys eventually gave out (ESRD) and I am now on dialysis.

However, the answer that I keep receiving from my medical team is "we don't do transplants because of the risk of the suppressing meds required."

Is this true? Are there any other options? I once heard of a study using high risk organs but cannot remember the specifics?

Hope you can help. Thank you.

Response from Dr. Henry

In many transplant centers HIV+ patients doing well on treatment are candidates for a kidney transplant and generally seem to do almost as well as HIV- patients after the transplant. KH
