HELP dangers of toxoplasmosis/ histoplasmosis from cats
Mar 6, 2011

can you get histoplasmosis from cats? Which dangers are more serious a cat who NEVER goes outside but has an litter box OR an outdoor cat(no litter box) that beings in dead mice/birds and leaves them strewn about the kitchen and what are the dangers? Is black mold dangerous to an HIV infected person? What are the dangers of mice droppings? Please answer, very important !

Response from Dr. Henry

AIDS patients with low CD4 counts (< 200) are advise to be careful handling cat litter boxes to avoid direct exposure to urine/feces. Using gloves to handle waste is often recommended but overall risk is low. Similarly, common sense approach to handling mouse droppings or direct contact is advised though risk is low. Black mold can pose a risk but I know of many patients who such exposure regularly who generally do OK but good room/bathroom/refrigerator hygiene is recommended for all. You should discuss with your HIV provider who may be aware of local risk and understand your clinical situation with a eye towards important details. KH
