|carotid arterial stenosis
Nov 10, 2010
i am 30years old and hiv positive 5 years and i am taking Atripla for 3 years now.
i never smoked, drugs, alchohol, and i try to eat healthy. i don't exersice anymore.
my doctor did an exam on my carotid arterial and on my vases before i start drug treatmend to see where i am and everything was ok.
now, after 5 years we did a recheck and we found that my left carotid arterial has stenosis, is 7mm. he told me to start eat healthier and start excercise. he also told me that this stenosis is because of HIV and in one year we will check again to see where i am.
the blood test where clear for cholesterol.
can you please give some instructions what is your opinion?

The role of carotid ultrasound for management of risk of heart disease remains unclear and is not well settled. If your Framingham risk score (http://hp2010.nhlbihin.net/atpIII/calculator.asp?usertype=prof) for heart disease is low (ask your doctor about that) then I am not sure that aggressive intervention based on a carotid ultrasound result may not be justified unless there is clear clinical concern for an individual patient.
