Atripla and Diarrhea
Oct 8, 2010

Hello,

I have been on Atripla for 6 mounths and I have been very happy with it. I have some issues with dreams but it has got much less of a problem over time. In the last 6 weeks i have started getting bad diarrhea in the morning. I have to go 2 to 5 times and it is quite bad. After this I am fine for the rest of the day and really go to the loo again and if i do things are much more normal. I spoke to my docter here in Kenya and he says i should not get diarrea with Atripla and gave me a 5 day course of antibiotics. They did nuthing and personaly i would imagine that if i had a bug it would be all day diarrea and not just in the morning. Would you think that it is the atripla? I dont want to change my pills as i love only having one pill a day but i am starting to worry that I will have to hang around the bathroom everymorning for fear of being caught short! Any advise would be well receved

Thank you in advance for all your advise and help on this amazing site.

Response from Dr. Henry

Atripla (most often due to the tenofovir component in my experience) can occasionally cause chronic gut/loose stools in patients but that is not common. Most often there is another explanation such as milk intolerance (lactose intolerance), infections (such as a parasite that would not be helped by many routine antibiotics or a C Difficile infection complication prior antibiotic therapy),gluten enteropathy, and numerous other possibilities. Often a cause can be hard to pin down but a thorough clinical evaluation is recommended. KH
