Length of time before lipodystrophy sets in
Sep 2, 2009

Hello,

I am a neonatal nurse and long-time reader of your site currently receiving a 30 day course of post-exposure prophylaxis (combivir and viread) and have read online that some people develop early lipodystrophy or it sets in after stopping PEP... i'm considering stopping the PEP because of this (currently only on day 3 and have the option to stop after 5) as the mother of the infant tested negative in the last month, but am still concerned about the window of time for seroconversion. is early lipodystrophy a risk?

Response from Dr. Henry

Acute lipodytrophy is not at all common and with some of the more modern regimens (ie Truvada instead of Combivir) I would consider it to be highly unlikely--I haven't seen a single case of acute lipodystrophy in our busy clinic over the last 3-4 years. KH
