| HIV Meds causing Diadetes Aug 15, 2009 I am a 13 yr survivor of AIDS and have recently been diagnosed with adult onset diabetes. I think this may have been caused by long term use of the meds. Is there a epecific drug that has that side affect? I gained 35 pounds in three months and then came the diabetes. Any help would be great. I am currently on Fuzeon, Intellence and Issentress. I am resistant to all other treatments. Thanks, Barry |

Response from Dr. Henry
Diabetes is common in the general population and with aging (also a strong genetic component) so it can be tough to pin down cause of diabetes to a specific HIV drug. Gaining weight also contributes to diabetes risk and is common in both the general population and perhaps more so in persons taking effective HIV drugs. Your current HIV meds have not been clearly linked to an increased risk for diabetes but data on that is still limited particularly for etravirine and raltegravir. KH | ||||||||||
