Proturuding veins
Jul 3, 2009

Hi, I am taking Kaletra and Combivir for about 3 years, my friends have recently commented about the veins on my legs which are starting to protrude. What do you think of this drug combination in regards to this, and what could help to get rid of veins, or get more fat in that area.

Thank you

Response from Dr. Henry

The AZT in Combivir may contribute to fat loss from the legs which can sometimes be stabilized or reversed (slowly) by switching to either tenofovir or abacavir. Kaletra has not been linked much to fat loss (as compared to fat gain) so it is more problematic whether a switch to boosted atazanavir or darunavir or a raltegravir based regime would help regain leg subcutaneous fat. Having a vascular surgeon assess the veins you describe to offer management suggestions may be worthwhile as well. KH
