ARV's and miscarriage (spontaneous abortion)
Jun 26, 2009

Has there been any reseach done on the rates of miscarriage in women who are on ARV's when they conceive and women who conceive and then start drug therapy? Is there a correlation between ARV's and miscarriage?

Thanks for your help

Response from Dr. Henry

There is somewhat conflicting data about whether protease inhibitors may have some negative effect on pregancies. Overall the benefits of HIV therapy to the mom and baby far outweight the low reported rate (reaching close to general population) of pregnancy complications from HIV meds. If the mom needs HIV drugs (has AIDS or CD4 count < 350) then treating her optimally (avoiding efavirenz if pregnancy is planned) is my usual practice. If treatment need is low/modest for the mom then wait I often until end of first trimester before starting ART. KH
