Prostrate cancer and HIV
May 20, 2009

Hi from South Africa. Love your forum

Im HIV positive since October 1995 and on meds since 1998 - CD count 948 (Jan 09) and VLoad Zero. Have just been diagnose with prostrate cancer. Is there any link between HIV and cancer? How will the cancer treatment interfere with my HIV treatment? Is there any issues I should be careful of?

Response from Dr. Henry

There may be an increased risk overall for cancer in HIV+ persons linked partly to CD4 nadir and CD4 counts as well as an aging population. There is not yet a link for and specific cancer (including prostate) from a particular HIV medication (data on that is still limited-need large number of patients followed for a long time to establish a link). There is a concern about increased risk for prostate cancer related to use of androgenic steroids including testosterone which are widely used and now marketed for men with low testosterone levels.
