| Belly Fat Apr 16, 2009 I have been on Truvada, Norvir, Reyataz for about 1 year now, once a day.(1st regimen), I notice my tummy is poking out more now. Is this belly fat from the HIV or Meds? I have gained some weight, 180 to 190 now, I am 5'11, BMI 25, so just curious if it is my regimen or my eating habits. I have been POZ for 2 1/2 years now. |

Response from Dr. Henry
Patients often gain 5-10 pounds the year after starting effective meds-mostly fat. Distribution varies but increased abdominal fat (both subcutaneous and intra-abdominal) can be seen. The bigger problem linked to HIV treatment is fat loss which has not been much of a problem with your current regimen to date (your current regimen would generally rank as a fat friendly regimen). I would not have alot of confidence based on data or my own experience that switching to another regimen would be highly likely to improve the situation. Assessing where the fat is (CT scan) can sometimes sort out. Diet and exercise can be helpful so seeking advice from your doc/trainer/nutritionist is recommended. KH | ||||||||||
