Fat mass in neck
Apr 12, 2009

I have been HIV+ for 25 yrs. Viral load undectable, tcells 700+. Had successfull low dose radiation theraby for swollen parotid glands. Now have benign fat masses in both sides of neck. MRI and biopsy show it is fat. Plastic surgeon told me these could be removed safely, face/neck surgeon advised against it due to possible nerve damage. It is very disfiguring. Any thoughts?

Response from Dr. Henry

Outcome depends on many individual factors. I have had some patients have fat removed from sides and back of neck (latter more typical buffalo hump) with mixed but often OK outcomes (OK is good from appearance standpoint for many patients). KH
